The devotional creates a weekly exploration of the Christian messages within the plots and characters of musical theater for an entire year. Dix covers 52 musicals and explores a specific Christian lesson within each one, with an accompanying reflection and prayer. She also includes a personal "musical memory" from her time spent with each musical.
Broadway Blessings is Dix's first bylined book, although she has helped hundreds of authors in the past twenty years as an editor, developmental coach, and ghostwriter, including Amazon bestsellers. She operates Big Ideas Writing, a content marketing firm that helps entrepreneurs and small to medium-sized businesses craft marketing messages, implement marketing strategies for their products and services, and author books. She is a former writer for Naperville Magazine and her work on behalf of her clients has appeared in numerous trade, local, and online publications. She has also worked extensively with the publisher of Broadway Blessings, Fig Factor Media, and BAna Studios.
Dix was a catechist for more than 15 years while raising her four children and regularly seeks out opportunities for spiritual growth. She now helps the local Scouts in Scouting America and Girl Scouts of the USA as the chair of the Joliet Diocese Catholic Committee on Scouting. The committee assists youth in the instruction and distribution of Catholic Scouting medals.
From 1989-2002, Karen performed in theater troupes in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois. She now resides In the Chicagoland area where she has performed in musical theater productions with Wheaton Drama in Wheaton, Summer Place Theatre, and Magical Starlight Theatre in Naperville. She said she eventually transitioned to an audience member and backstage support for her daughters, who appeared in several summer productions at North Central College directed by Suzy Olsen, who wrote the foreword for Broadway Blessings.
"Although this book is a Christian devotional, the topics explored within are universal values such as kindness, forgiveness, hope, and redemption," said Dix. "By presenting faith within the genre of musical theater, I hope I can help others find solace in prayer and highlight the Christian messages we tend to overlook in secular entertainment."
